Finding beauty in the banal

September’s exhibition ‘Accidental Poetry’ introduces two new artists to the gallery – Jane Cairns and Rebecca Gouldson, along with new work by Lauri Hopkins and William Reardon. Ceramics, etched metal wall pieces and mixed media constructions are brought together in this show, revealing each artist’s interest in conveying something of the beauty they find in the banal objects and sites around them, which are often overlooked by others.

Jane Cairns works from her studio near the Thames Barrier, responding to her riverside and industrial surroundings to make multi-layered, multi-fired ceramic vessels and individual sculptural forms.  Jane is creating some new Potlatch vessels for the exhibition.

Rebecca Gouldson’s inspiration stems from both the built environment and the natural landscape. Drawing, making prints and taking photographs are the starting point to developing the diverse imagery used on the pieces. For Quercus Gallery’s show Rebecca is producing some new metal wall pieces in response to walking in Bath.

Please note that that the gallery will be closed for redecoration and rehanging between Sunday 24 September and Monday 1 October inclusive.

Celebrating Quercus Gallery’s first year

Friday evening saw a few corks popped at the opening of the summer show, marking just over a year since Quercus Gallery launched.  As well as presenting new work by artists who have been associated with the gallery over this last year, this show introduces a selection of new artists, continuing the focus from the very first show ‘Introducing‘ back in June 2013.

We are pleased to welcome new artists Georgina Allen, Martine Baldwin, Elisabeth Barry, Sally James, Susan Laughton, Lynda Marwood and Desa Philippi.

Also on display are new book cover assemblages by Lauri Hopkins and work by Clare Packer, Peter Rush, Vanessa Gardiner and Stef Mitchell.

In other news we’re delighted to announce that both Vanessa Gardiner and Helen Booth have work on display in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, which runs until 17 August.

New artist added to forthcoming show…

I’m delighted to announce that Quercus Gallery will be showing a selection of work by Stef Mitchell in the forthcoming exhibition PATTERNS OF ENQUIRY  16 May – 14 June.

Stef is an artist based in Yorkshire who is widely known for her painting and printmaking.  Her practice is founded on a close relationship with the landscape, producing beautiful, intimate, printed works on paper directly from plants.  Come and view the collection of Stef’s prints in the next show, which opens on Friday 16th May at 6pm, alongside work by other new gallery artists Clare Packer and Elodie Alexandre.

First look…

Thank you to Bath Life’s January edition for featuring Quercus Gallery in their review of 2013’s best new openings.

With the new website now launched, here’s a little look back at Quercus Gallery’s launch in sunny June 2013 – a few photos from the opening night of the first show, INTRODUCING.

NEW YEAR…NEW WEBSITE

Happy New Year and welcome to the new Quercus Gallery website!

The gallery was busy over the Christmas period with a great response to the new selection of artists introduced for GLEAM: painter Helen Booth, jewellers Rose Ellen Cob & Heather McDermott and ceramicist Sian Patterson.

GLEAM is being extended until the end of this month, with work being added by Joan Doerr, William Reardon, Chloe Steele and Robert Woolner.

I hope you enjoy browsing the new site and please get in touch with any queries you may have.
